One of my most heartfelt wishes for you is that someday I’ll be out of a job. Most of the conditions that I treat as a heart and lung surgeon are preventable. It is never too late to begin informing yourself and making different choices that may give you years, even decades of longer, better life. You know this list already: what you eat, how much you exercise, whether you smoke, stress modification, careful control of your cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure. You also probably know by now, most likely from discouraging personal experience, that making changes in your life isn’t easy. What seems to matter the most isn’t your will power, but your circumstances. The more that you are with others who share your goals, the more likely it will be that all of you will succeed. Learn to think in groups. Reach out and make new friendships. You will live longer! |
